Deficit of 23% dry fodder, 32% green fodder and 36% concentrate in the country

Answering a question in Lok Sabha on the availability of fodder for the dairy sector, the Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala informed the house that, The Thirty-Fourth Report on Standing Committee on Agriculture has estimated that the country has a requirement of 530million tons of dry fodder, 880million tons of green fodder and 96 million tons requirement of concentrate, in the year 2020 against the availability of 408million tons of dry fodder, 596million tons of green fodder and 61 million tons of concentrate, thus having a deficit of 23% dry fodder, 32% green fodder and 36% concentrate, on dry matter basis. By the year 2025, the deficit of dry fodder, green fodder and concentrate would be 23%, 40% and 38%, respectively. The shortage of fodder may affect milk production and thereby the dairy product.

(c) & (d) Union Government in conjunction with the State Governments and Union Territories has already taken necessary steps to bridge the gap of fodder through various ongoing Schemes viz., National Livestock Mission with a Sub Mission on Fodder and Feed Development and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana. Under these schemes, financial assistance is provided to all the States and Union Territories for various fodder development activities planned by them.
