GST: Tax slab fixed for animal and animal products

To finalize the tax slabs following the implementation of GST across India, a two day meeting concluded on Thursday at Srinagar in the chairmanship of central finance minister Arun Jaitley. In this high level meet of the GST council, tax rates were finalized on nearly 80 to 90 percent goods and services. For finalizing tax slabs on remaining 10% products and services, council will have the meeting on 3rd June. Government is planning to roll out GST all across India from 1st of July.

Revenue secretary Hansmukh Adhiya informed media that seven percent products are exempted from tax, whereas fourteen percent products are kept in 5% tax slab, 17 percent products are in 12% tax slab and 43 percent products are in 18% tax slab. 19 percent products are kept in highest tax slab of 28 percent.

Let’s explore the GST rates for animal and animal products:

  1. Live animals: Barring Horse all live animals including bovine, swine, sheep, goat, donkey, mule, poultry birds, ducks, Geese, turkey are exempted from the tax. Horse is kept in 12% tax slab.
  2. Poultry & Meat: Fresh or chilled meat of Bovine, swine, sheep, goat, donkey, poultry birds, ducks, geese, turkey is kept tax free. Processed meat and packaged meat is kept in 12% GST slab.
  3. Dairy products : Fresh milk, pasteurized milk, yogurt, butter milk are kept tax free while UTH milk, sweet milk or cream , packaged branded paneer are kept in 5% GST slab. Ghee, butter and cheese are kept in 12% whereas condensed milk is kept in 18% GST tax slab.
  4. Eggs: Fresh (in shell) eggs, preserved or cooked are kept tax free whereas eggs not in shell, egg yolk, fresh dried, steam cooked or boiled molded, frozen preserved are kept in 5% tax slab.
  5. Animal feed- cattle feed, poultry feed, aquatic feed, supplements & husk of pulses, concentrates & additives, Wheat bran feed ; DOC are kept tax free, whereas meat meal or fish meal kept in 5% tax slab.
  6. Semen: Semen and frozen semen are kept tax free.
