Livestock sector crucial in achieving ‘zero hunger’: Dr Selva Kumar

The Tamil Nadu University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (TANUVAS) Vice-Chancellor DR KN Selva Kumar has said that the livestock sector will play a crucial role in achieving the ‘zero hunger target by 2030. He expressed this while Delivering the keynote address at the 11^th convocation of Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University (SVVU), Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, which was held at the university auditorium on Thursday 7^th of July 2022.

Earlier, Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Chancellor of universities Biswa Bhusan Harichandan virtually inaugurated the convocation program and congratulated the university for its measures to conserve Punganur and Ongole breeds of cattle and Nellore breed of sheep. 

Vice-Chancellor of Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University Dr V Padmanabha Reddy, while presenting the annual report, informed that intense research on in-vitro fertilization (IVF) technology is underway in the university for the conservation of indigenous cattle breeds. SVVU established an IVF lab under an MoU with the TTD and received a research grant of Rs 3.8 crore.  He highlighted that the university had supplied 1,00,000 and 1,000 doses of semen collected from Ongole and Punganur breeds respectively to farmers for Breed conservation.

On this occasion, the university presented 32 gold medals to those students who excelled in various fields and awarded degrees to 392 students, including 281 UG students, 96 PG students and 15 PhD students. Aman Kumar Tiwari, a 2016 batch student of BVSc&AH, has received 11 gold medals highest by any student of the university, for his meritorious performance and for securing the highest Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA).
