AWBI set to get a 10 crore Rupees boost

Pashu Sandesh, 02 March 2018

With the new Chairman at the helm of affairs, Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) is all set to get a much-needed boost of INR 10 crore in its funding which has seen a slump for the last two years to a meager 2.5 crore to run its affair. Ministry of Forest and Climate has increased the budget of AWBI to INR 10crore for the financial year 2018-19. AWBI will certainly push for more budget as this allocated budget is still less to manage and fund its mandate of animal welfare.

Chairman S P Gupta on many occasions stressed on the fact that even though the AWBI is committed on protection and prevention of cruelty against each and every animal, his primary focus would be on the protection and welfare of cow. AWBI has taken a serious view on the menace of cattle roaming on the streets and is planning to fund only those Gaushalas which would take care of unwanted cows.

Many Animal welfare organizations do not agree with the views of AWBI Chairman. PETA has clearly opposed the stand taken by the AWBI on the issue of Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. However, AWBI called the event a total success and animal cruelty-free.
