Stop step motherly treatment of Poultry Industry, Dr Reddy urges Government

Pashu Sandesh, 04 July 2019

The Telangana MP Dr Gaddam Ranjit Reddy requested the Central Government to stop the step-motherly treatment of the Poultry Industry in the country. The TRS party MP was making his speech during the zero hour in the Lok Sabha on 03rd July.

Incidentally Dr Reddy is a Master in Veterinary Science from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University, Rajendra Nagar, Hyderabad. Dr Ranjit Reddy began his career in the field as a technical advisor to a poultry farm in Aziznagar village in Chevella constituency from where he has contested and won the Lok Sabha seat. He has a vast knowledge of poultry Industry and has served as a six-term president of the Telangana Poultry Breeders Association.

Dr Reddy in his speech highlighted the importance of the Poultry industry. As per Dr Reddy no Government, either Centre or State have taken care of the poultry industry and everyone just talks about the Green revolution, white revolution and Blue Revolution. The poultry industry is made to struggle and on its own, the industry has grown from Back yard poultry to an Industry which contributing around 1lakh crore rupees in the GDP through domestic sales and export of Poultry and Poultry products.

Dr Reddy also highlighted the fact that India is the 3rd largest producer of the Eggs and 5th largest producer of Chicken in the World. Now this industry is facing severe crises of Maize which is the main component of the Chickenfeed. Shortage of Maize has severely affected the supply of feed to the Poultry industry which is now demanding Government intervention in facilitating the import of the Maize from other countries.

Dr Reddy also urged the Government to give the Umbrella cover of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) to the poultry industry as was given till 89 -90. Through NAFED the Poultry Industry would be able to offset the losses it sustains during the lean seasons, stressed Dr Reddy.

To our readers, NAFED is an apex organisation of marketing cooperatives for agricultural produce in India, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India. It was formed on the 02 October 1958 to promote the trade of agricultural produce and forest resources across the nation. NAFED is the nodal agency to implement price stabilisation measures under "Operation Greens" which aims to double the farmers' income by 2022. NAFED can provide much-needed support to the Poultry Industry which at present is finding difficulty in finding its feet on the ground due to severe feed crises and the grossly fluctuating Poultry Market.
